Our image sensors and detection subsystems are designed to address demanding XFEL applications.

Photon Science

e2v’s imaging sensors are used to detect the X-rays scattered by the scientific samples in X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) beams. From these scattered X-rays scientists can “see” the atomic structure of proteins and other nano-scale structures. Leveraging its experience of radiation damage in the context of space applications, e2v has developed radiation hard CCD image sensors for use in photon science; they’re manufactured on thick silicon to give a good sensitivity to X-Ray photons with energies of up to 20keV. They also feature very high peak signal and fast readout to work with highly intense photon sources.

Fully integrated detection subsystems

At e2v, we also provide fully integrated detection subsystems including camera heads, readout electronics, cooling solutions and software development kits able to minimise our customers’ integration efforts. For its XFEL facility in Korea, Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) has chosen e2v, which has delivered Multi-Port Charge Coupled Devices (MPCCD) Detector systems in a challenging timescale of 12 months, including commissioning.
