Trigger Transformers for Three-Electrode

Our trigger transformers are used to provide a fast high voltage pulse. This high voltage pulse is applied to the third (trigger) electrode to initiate switching action in the three-electrode spark gaps.

Our standard range of trigger transformers are designed to provide fast rise-time pulses, typically up to 30kV/µs, for triggering three-electrode spark gaps.

Three types of trigger transformer are available, each with its own selective features. Either positive or negative pulses can be obtained from all of the transformers depending on how the primary winding is connected.

GX3500 Series

The GX3500 Series of triggered three-electrode spark gaps are gas discharge tubes, hermetically sealed in a ceramic/metal envelope for use in air. Tubes with a DC hold-off voltage in the standard range 15 to 50 kV are available. Device breakdown voltage is signified by numerals (expressed in hundreds of volts) following the series type identifier: e.g. GX3500-400 has a 40 kV DC hold-off voltage capability. The operational voltage range for the GX3500 Series is 40% to 80% of DC hold-off voltage.

Typical Applications

  • Crowbar circuits for high power travelling wave tubes, power klystrons and similar devices
  • High voltage switches for laser firing
  • General switching applications
