In support of the 2004 Paralympics, e2v technologies in Chelmsford has sponsored Mark Wright, Product Engineer at the Company to help train the British Team. Historically a runner himself, Mark voluntarily helps train young athletes as they prepare for middle and long distance sprints, throwing events and wheelchair athletics.
As one of the UK Paralympic team’s staff coaches, he ensures the athletes follow the most effective training programmes, monitoring the athletes’ performance and feeding back to their coaches in order to improve efficiencies.
“All of the athletes in the team have been working very hard to prepare for these Games and we hope to see a lot of medals coming home this year! At the European Championships, all of our athletes received silver or bronze medals and we’d like to see that happen in Greece, too. I appreciate the opportunity that e2v has offered to the team for this event. The Company has been very supportive, allowing me to take time out to help the individuals prepare for the Paralympics.” Comments Mark.
Mark will be heading for the holding camp in Cyprus for four weeks while the Games take place in Greece. He will help out with final preparations, ensuring those taking part are fully prepared for the conditions they will face in the competition, in particular the heat, sunlight and hydration levels. 70 athletes will compete from the UK under Mark’s watchful eye.
The Paralympic Games are second only to the Olympic Games in their magnitude. Approximately 4,000 athletes from 145 nations will show the world what they are capable of achieving - representing their countries in 19 Paralympic sports.
Athletes, media and spectators will be welcomed at the Opening Ceremony on 17 September 2004.
